OT Week 22 - David

Our Hands-on script that we used with flannelgraph for David this week:

The Story of David

In the Days of King Saul in Israel, a boy named David helped his seven brothers look after their father’s flocks. Though he was youngest, David was a strong, brave boy who loves and trusted God.

When the lion or bear would come for the sheep, David would fight and kill them!

One day, the prophet Samuel came to see David’s father, Jesse. God was going to choose the next king of Israel from among Jesse’s sons! Jesse showed Samuel the first seven of his sons, one by one. But God told Samuel that none of them were going to be king! So Jesse brought David in from taking care of the sheep. Samuel anointed David as king over Israel! But he wasn’t going to rule just yet…

Later, King Saul was having some real problems! So, some men brought David to him to sing and play the harp to Saul, and when David played, Saul felt better.

When the Philistines went to battle against Israel, David’s brothers went to fight alongside Saul. David wasn’t allowed to go at first. At the camp, a mighty, giant warrior named Goliath came out and made fun of the Israelites and God! But no one would fight him because he was so big! Every day for 40 days he came out and made fun.

Jesse got worried about his sons, so he sent David with some gifts for the commander of his brothers and to see how they were doing. When he got there, he found out about Goliath and he volunteered to fight! When Saul heard about it, he was worried that David couldn’t win, but David was sure that God was on his side and that he’d beat Goliath.

David took his sling and went out to meet the giant. Goliath made fun of David and of God again, but David told him that God would give David the victory and he ran to fight Goliath. He took his sling and shot a stone into Goliath’s forehead! Goliath fell down! David killed a giant! The Philistines were so afraid that they ran away!

David became good friends with Jonathan, Saul’s son. The people were very happy and loved David, but Saul was jealous of David. He tried to kill David! Jonathan warned him by shooting an arrow as a signal that Saul wanted to hurt him. David was very sad, but had to leave so Saul couldn’t get him, but Saul chased him!

David wanted to prove to Saul that he didn’t want to hurt him, so one night he and one of his friends went to Saul’s army camp and took the spear and water pot by Saul’s head while he was sleeping! David left the camp then yelled back to Saul and told him that he didn’t want to hurt him! Saul decided to let David go, and later he died in battle against the Philistines.

David became king of all Israel!
